Vice President (Academic) Brief Profile

Prof. ChM. Dr. Leong Loong Kong has built an illustrious academic career that spans over 19 years, further enhanced by two years of industry experience. Currently serving as Vice President (Academic) and Professor at Southern University College, Prof. Leong has consistently shown a strong dedication to advancing education, research, and the practical application of chemical sciences.

His academic journey began at Universiti Putra Malaysia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Petroleum Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Advanced Material (Catalysis). This robust academic foundation, coupled with postdoctoral research at COMBICAT, University of Malaya, equipped him with the expertise to make significant contributions in both academic and industrial spheres.

Prof. Leong began his academic career at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman as an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering departments. His dedication and expertise earned him a promotion to Associate Professor, during which time he also served as the Head of Programme for the Ph.D. and Master of Science programs. In this role, his leadership was instrumental in developing the curriculum and promoting academic excellence.

In addition to his academic endeavors, Prof. Leong made substantial contributions to the industry, notably as the Manager for Base Oil Operations, Research & Development at Excelube Marketing (M) Sdn. Bhd. His dual experience in academia and industry enables him to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, driving innovation and real-world solutions.

Prof. Leong’s administrative expertise includes establishing and securing accreditation for various undergraduate and postgraduate programs, overseeing program monitoring, quality control, and budget planning. He has also initiated local and international research collaborations, developed policies for Continual Quality Improvement, and contributed to the creation of new programs and research laboratories. His involvement extends to serving on the Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) Internal Audit team and reviewing grant applications.

An active member of Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM), Prof. Leong has played a pivotal role in various professional activities, including serving as an MQA Panel Assessor, leading workshops on accreditation and educational practices, and contributing to Malaysia’s chemistry syllabus development. His work as an external assessor, international peer reviewer, and principal instructor in Chemistry workshops underscores his commitment to advancing chemical sciences and education globally.
